One of the Biggest Mistakes Speakers Are Making Right Now! 18 Mar 2019 3:02 PM (6 years ago)

One of the Biggest Mistakes Speakers Are Making Right Now!

I’m so tired of hearing speakers say…”I’m going to become famous”…or… “I’m going to be the next Tony Robbins” …or… “I’m going to be the next Les Brown” …or… “I’m going to be the next (whomever)!”

Why in the world would you want to be the next anybody!?!

Be the first, and only, YOU!

Create your own uniqueness, your own style, your own methods, your own following. I’m not saying that you shouldn’t observe famous speakers.

I believe you can always learn a few things from observing anyone. However, trying to model your career after a “very famous” speaker is a mistake and one of the biggest mistakes most speakers make.

Here’s why…

FREE WEBINAR REGISTER NOW

Most are not like most famous speakers.

They caught a big break somewhere along the line that either…had a movie made about their life…created a best-selling book series…won a Gold medal in the Olympics…played in the Super Bowl…the list goes on and on.

I’m not saying that one (or more) of those things couldn’t happen for you. And if any did happen, I’d be very happy for you and the first one to congratulate you. However, the chance of one of those things happening is not likely.

Plus, one of those things rarely happens overnight and without months, even years, of hard work.

Even if you were fortunate enough to write, promote and sell a best-selling book (which seems about the quickest of those listed above), it still would require an enormous amount of time, energy, effort and hard work.

I see so many talented speakers “spinning their wheels” by spending so much time on trying to create the “big break,” they lose out on income. It’s not really their fault because that’s what so many people in the speaking industry program them to believe they need to do in order to succeed as a speaker.

What I prefer to do is model my career after non-famous speakers who are making big money because they are obviously doing something right.

My personal focus is ONE thing: “Get Bookings!”

That’s it!  Period!

In my opinion, the most important thing you can do is focus on getting to event coordinators because they have the money to book you to speak for events. And, that’s all that really matters in this speaking game!

You probably know that one of the markets I targeted when I was starting was the college market. And, you know that because of all the requests I was getting from speakers, I started teaching my College Speaking Success Boot Camp.

Over the years, we’ve received several calls and emails from speakers who heard of me and wanted to register. But we also receive calls and emails from speakers who didn’t know of me and had questions.

One speaker called and wanted to talk with me so he could basically question me to see if I really knew what I was talking about. Usually, I never get on the phone with anybody who isn’t one of my Coaching Members due to my crazy and hectic schedule. However, this particular day I was in the office with a few free minutes before my next Coaching call so I got on the phone with this guy.

He said he’d been speaking on the college circuit for years and had only heard of me a little. He began by asking that if I knew so much about the college speaking market, then why hasn’t he seen me standing at a conference exhibit booth that    a major student activities association puts on every year?

My response was:

I wasn’t implying that being a member of that particular association was a bad move, just not the smartest. I then told him that I, too, was a member of the association (primarily to get the mailing list of the coordinators).

However, when it comes to getting booked, I find all the organizations who could book me to speak at colleges and student conferences that other speakers don’t know about. Then I began naming 2 or 3 while also sharing a few strategies I used to get booked over other speakers he HAD heard of on the college circuit.

To make a long story short, after about 20-minutes on the phone with this guy,    his head spinning with so many new ideas for how he could instantly get bookings.

After speaking with him for this 20-minute period and sharing these ideas, he apologized numerous times for assuming that I didn’t know what I was talking about simply because HE hadn’t really heard of me even though he had been in that market for years.

(By the way, he immediately signed up for the Boot Camp because he quickly realized that if he wanted to succeed, then he needed to “invest in himself!”)

So Here Is The BIG Marketing Lesson:

“Just because you haven’t heard of a particular speaker in a market, don’t assume he or she isn’t successful and making a ton of money!”

So, back to the Big Mistake – Focusing primarily on Becoming a Famous Speaker!

Don’t fall into the trap that I see so many talented speakers fall into by trying to model a speaking career after a famous speaker.

If you are currently in that trap right now, STOP! You are wasting so much valuable time, energy, effort and money trying to become famous that YOU are losing out on speaking engagements to speakers who don’t focus on the “famous thing.”

Here’s one of my personal philosophies that I follow for my own speaking business and I encourage you to follow it, as well:

“Focus on finding coordinators who control speaking

budgets and get them to book YOU… period!”

You should adopt it, follow it and keep reminding yourself of this daily.

Why?

Because it’s so easy to get caught up in the whole…

“I need to get on the major television show”

…or…”I need to get in the USA Today newspaper”

…or…”I need to create the next Chicken Soup for the Soul® book series”

…or…”I need to do (fill in the blank) to become famous!”

Stop wasting your money and time on trying to become a famous speaker. If it happens for you as you’re making big money, then great. If not, so what!  At least you still have a successful speaking business!

Give me the choice between “being famous” or “making big money, each and every year” — I’ll take the money EVERY time!

Why?

Because when you walk into your bank to deposit a check from a speaking engagement, the teller will never say to you, “I’m sorry. We can’t deposit your check for you because you’re not a famous speaker.”

The bank will always accept your check, so why would you care if you’re famous or not!?!

From this day forward, only focus on the following:

“The KEY and the ONLY thing you should be focusing your time, energy, effort and money on is getting known by the people in the niche market you want to speak in who have the money to book YOU to speak!”

That’s it!  Find them and market to them OVER and OVER and OVER again!

And if you do, you can succeed more as a speaker than you ever imagined!

“Making excuses is the one sure-way to failure!

In every situation, you can only have two things: excuses or solutions. If you always focus on the excuse why you can’t become wealthy, then you’ll never find the solution for how YOU CAN become wealthy!”

How to Get a TON of Bookings From Your Speaking Contract!

When I’m teaching speakers in my live Big Money Speaker® events, online trainings and home study courses, I often spend a considerable amount of time teaching unique ways they never thought of for attracting new and repeat business.

Why? Because, there are some simple, yet powerful strategies that, when applied, can immediately increase the number of speaking engagements you receive.

Here is one of those Big Money Speaker® strategies that I highly suggest you IMMEDIATELY implement!  Did you catch that?  IMMEDIATELY!

Don’t just read about this strategy, use it IMMEDIATELY because it is magical for generating new business.

This Big Money Speaker® strategy is what I call…

Learn More

“The Malinchak Contract Referral Clause”

Why did I name it this? Because, it came to me out of thin air one evening in the very beginning of my speaking career when I was reading a contract.

When it came hit me, I IMMEDIATELY added it to my speaking contract. I didn’t procrastinate and think about it. I took action! And, let me tell you, it instantly became magical.

I have used it ever since to this very day and have taught it to numerous new, established and experienced speakers, even some of the biggest names in the speaking industry, and they, too, have all agreed it is one of the greatest strategies they have ever learned.

And, I sincerely believe that you will agree it is magical if you TAKE ACTION by IMMEDIATELY using it.

Here it is…

“The Malinchak Contract Referral Clause” is simply a clause you add to your speaking contract that contractually commits the person booking you to refer you other potential bookings.

Ahhh, bet you never thought about something like this!

And, the clause even has an additional line that contractually commits event coordinators to provide you with typed testimonial letters after your presentations.

Not only can this clause potentially increase your referral and spin-off bookings, it can also help to eliminate you continuously pursuing event coordinators asking for testimonial letters after events.

In my actual live events, online trainings and home study courses, I give all participants a full manual with several of my personal pre-written documents that you can literally copy word-for-word and use for yourself. How easy is that!

Because you are reading this, I’m going to share it with you so you can use it. Let me be very clear by saying, I am not a lawyer and this does not constitute any type of legal advice whatsoever.

This is a sample only and I highly recommend that you seek proper legal counsel when dealing with any/all contracts, agreements, negotiations, etc.

Here is the actual clause that I use in my speaking agreement:

“If program is satisfactory, event coordinator agrees to provide speaker with the names and contact information of two associates whose groups may benefit from booking the speaker and agrees to provide a typed testimonial letter on group, organization or company letterhead stating a few positive comments about the presentation within 14 days after the event.”

I hope this helps you to think differently, like a Big Money Speaker® because doing so can transform your business and life!

Why the Same Kryptonite That Weakened Superman is Weakening Your Ability to Become A Big Money Speaker®! 18 Mar 2019 2:46 PM (6 years ago)

Why the Same Kryptonite That Weakened Superman is Weakening Your Ability to Become A Big Money Speaker®!

When I was a kid, I loved the Superman movies (wasn’t too thrilled with the remake version)! Clark Kent was da’ man – the way he could jump into a phone booth and…BAM! Out came the strongest, coolest guy to save the day!

Man, I can just see my man flying through the air “leaping tall buildings with a single-bound!” Go Supey, Go!!! Little (and now grown) James Malinchak still loves you brother!

As strong as Superman was, he had one major weakness! Do you remember what it was? (If not, you’re not a true-blue Superman follower!) Yep, you guessed it! Kryptonite!

Aww! I always got so worried when my man “Supey” would encounter a bad guy who would hit “Supey” with some Kryptonite!

It didn’t matter how strong and courageous Superman was, when he came in contact with that glowing green rock, he immediately went into a fog and became weak. It was that hidden force that brought even the strongest of Super Heroes to his knees!

FREE WEBINAR REGISTER NOW

Well, I’ve actually found the same is true for speakers. There’s a “Speaker Kryptonite” that seems to put you into a fog, make you weak, bring you to your knees and cause you to become paralyzed from moving forward with your speaking career.

So what’s your “Speaker Kryptonite?”

It’s believing that you have to be a great speaker in order to get paid to speak. This preconceived, self-limiting belief that you allow yourself to believe about your worthiness to be speaking in front of groups is destroying your speaking business.

This “Speaker Kryptonite” is the one poison I see that stops most speakers from first getting started, then second, making BIG money.

The notion that you have to be a great speaker in order to get paid to speak is one of the biggest lies that continues to get passed around throughout the speaking industry.

Nothing could be further from the truth!

It’s NOT about certain presentation skills that certain ‘speaker coaches’ (and I use that term loosely) try and sell you!

You know what I’m talking about because I’m sure you’ve heard it at some point like I have.

These BS ‘speaker coaches’ tell you that during your presentation…

“You have to walk in a V-formation”

”You have to make eye-contact with each person in the audience 37 ½ times or you’ll never communicate the message”

”You have to use fancy hand-gestures to emphasize points”

“You have to clearly say and state every word and every line or audiences will think you’re not a professional”

…Blah, Blah, Blah!

Come on – give me a break! What a load of BS!

I’ve never made any money either in a paid speaking fee or from Platform Selling because of any of that stuff!

One of the BEST pieces of speaking advice I could ever give to you that’s imperative for you to deeply understand is this:

All speaking is – is having a message to say that helps people, then standing-up in front of groups and saying it to help people!

That’s it!…period!

Who cares if you walk in a V…or, if you look at every person in the audience for ‘x’ number of times…or, if you use fancy hand-gestures…or, if you say every word and every line perfectly, etc.

Hear me now as I say this loudly: NONE OF THAT MATTERS!

As a matter of fact, the more you do that stuff, the less the audience will relate to you!

Want to know why?

They want to be able to relate to you…be inspired by you…and believe that, because of you, they CAN do it too! Whatever it is!

It’s the same for any topic…it doesn’t matter if your topic is sales, leadership, spirituality, etiquette, real estate, motivation, building a business, diversity, team-building, customer service, living on purpose, inspiration, getting a job, networking, internet marketing, etc.

Have I ever messed-up in a presentation? ABSOLUTELY! As a matter of fact, I do so in just about every presentation to this day! Not only do I “flub” words and forget certain lines or stories to say, but I’ve actually fallen off of three stages in my career. If you watched me speak for a group, you would quickly see that I’m never going to win any ribbons in any presentation skills contest.

But, again, it’s NOT about presentation skills stage mechanics! It’s about delivering your message to help people!

A few years ago, I did a motivational presentation for a group of about 800 college students, parents and faculty members at a Community College in Southern California. It was a very fulfilling night. After the presentation, kids and parents were coming up hugging me and asking for pictures and if I would autograph their books.

In addition to helping many people with my motivational message, money-wise, it was also a great night. In addition to the $7,500 fee I was paid for the 45-minute presentation, the audience also bought a little over $12,000 of my books and training programs. Not bad – almost $20,000 for 45-minutes.

As the awesome crowd was breaking-up, a speech professor from the college approached me and asked if I would like to see a copy of the 8-page critique she wrote on me consisting of “all of the things I did wrong in my presentation.” (Ha, ha – I’m not joking!)

Can you believe this?!?

I just inspired and helped the audience of kids, parents and faculty members, giving them hope and many tips and ideas for overcoming any challenge they’re facing in their personal and professional lives…and also taught them the skills for implementing them.

On top of that, from a business perspective, I had just made almost $20,000 for being able to deliver my message and help these people!

Yet, here’s this speech Professor (who I bet NEVER got paid for a single presentation in her life) basically telling me that the majority of my presentation didn’t live up to the standards of a “good presentation” and was “so bad” that she took 8-pages of notes on all the things “I did wrong” in my presentation!

Man, I’m even laughing at it as I’m writing this!

So, did I accept the “presentation skills critique?”

Come-on, are you serious?!?!

I politely said…

”Maam, no thank you because I’m not interested in your critique of how many times I said ‘uhm’…or that I had my hand in my pocket…or that I didn’t walk in a ‘V’…or that I flubbed lines. What you don’t seem to understand is that I don’t deliver speeches. I have a message to say that helps people and I simply stand-up in front of groups and say it to help them! And tonight, I made a great, positive difference in the lives of the people who were here in the audience because of how they reacted after hearing my message. So, thank you but I could care-less about how ‘bad’ you think my presentation was from a presentation skills standpoint!”

She didn’t like that too much and scurried away!

Now, I’m not saying that you shouldn’t strive to improve your delivery, timing and your comfort level on stage. No, no, no! That’s not what I’m saying at all.

The teaching point I really want you to get is…

If you’re allowing this “Presentation Skills Speaker Kryptonite Poison” to drive your speaking business then you’ll never make any real money because you’ll be way too focused on all of that stuff that just doesn’t matter!

Remember, it’s not about “walking in a V-formation…making eye-contact with each person in the audience 37 ½ times… …using fancy hand-gestures to emphasize points…clearly saying and stating every word and every line, etc.”

All speaking is – is having a message to say that helps people, then standing-up in front of groups and saying it to help people!

What Gene Simmons, Leader of the Legendary Rock-n-Roll Band KISS, Can Teach You About Becoming a Big Money Speaker®! 18 Mar 2019 1:57 PM (6 years ago)

What Gene Simmons, Leader of the Legendary Rock-n-Roll Band KISS, Can Teach You About Becoming a Big Money Speaker®!

I believe most of the BEST speaker-marketing ideas come from outside of the speaking industry. This is a lesson many speakers miss.

I have never listened to one KISS album, wouldn’t have a clue of any KISS song titles and couldn’t name one band member other than band leader Gene Simmons.

Here’s why I love Gene and study him. As I was channel surfing the television late one evening several years ago, I came across Gene being interviewed on a business show.

That intrigued me as I thought, why is a band-guy on this business show? This ought to be quite humorous.

So I decided to watch for a few minutes and get a good laugh.

While watching, I quickly realized Gene Simmons was nothing short of brilliant. The host asked Gene why KISS sold so many albums and continues to earn mega-millions each year while many other talented artists never seem to make it?

Gene’s answer was profound and made me an instant fan. He said:

FREE WEBINAR REGISTER NOW

“That’s easy. Most artists just don’t get it. While they’re all out spending an enormous amount of time and money trying to craft their songs, vocals and lyrics, I’m building and expanding a brand and creating revenue streams!”

WOW!  Talk about a person who gets it!

If you didn’t catch-the-message then you’re missing one of the most important speaker marketing lessons that can sky-rocket your speaking business to incredible levels.

What Gene was talking about was that he didn’t focus the majority of his time on the craft of being a musician. He focused the majority of his time on the marketing and business side.

So, what does this have to do with you as a speaker?

It has everything to do with you and your speaking business. I’m always preaching to new and experienced speakers that I teach in my live events, online trainings and in my personalized coaching programs that…

You’re NOT in the speaking business. You’re in the business of marketing your speaking services!

It doesn’t matter what your message is about or how good of a speaker you are, if you’re not focusing 90% of your time and energy on positioning and marketing yourself and your uniqueness while creating multiple streams of speaking income, then you will not grow your business.

It doesn’t matter how great you are at the craft, in this case delivering a presentation. If you can’t effectively market yourself to attract and close bookings, then you will experience frustration as a speaker.

If you want your speaking business to soar to higher levels you dream of reaching, then from this moment forward, focus the majority of your time and energy on the marketing!

Remember:

“The marketing is more important than the mastery!”

What Spending 4-Days With the Greatest Basketball Player of All-Time – Michael Jordan – Reminded Me About 3 KEYS for Becoming a Big Money Speaker®! 26 Feb 2019 2:55 PM (6 years ago)

What Spending 4-Days With the Greatest Basketball Player of All-Time – Michael Jordan – Reminded Me About 3 KEYS for Becoming a Big Money Speaker®!

I had the honor and privilege of spending 4-days at the Mirage Resort in Las Vegas with Michael Jordan and an incredible group of other top achievers consisting of several of the top college and NBA basketball coaches.

Accompanying me to MJ’s event were Wally Malinchak (my brother) and Cindy McLane (my sister and Executive Assistant), which made it a great family experience.

The picture of Cindy and I with Michael cracks me up as she was so nervous when she first met MJ. I almost had to remind Cindy to speak when Michael started talking to her as she looked as though she was literally going to faint (LOL– only joking!)

Being around Michael caused me to realize three important factors that relate to becoming a Big Money Speaker®.

FREE WEBINAR REGISTER NOW

The first realization was the “feeling” received from being around Michael

Although I have been around numerous celebrities, it’s still a different feeling being around Michael. You can tell you are in the presence of a legend and one of the greatest athletes of all-time!  Can’t explain it, but it’s definitely different.

And if you think about anything related to Michael and his brand, the feeling is much different than others (competitors) doing similar promotion and marketing of their brands.

That’s when it hit me, meaning the importance of creating the right “feeling” for buyers when they think about your products, services, positioning, branding and, especially, marketing.

I see so many speakers, authors, trainers, coaches, consultants, seminar leaders and entrepreneurs who just “throw” anything out to the public that doesn’t create a memorable and unique feeling for themselves.

I’ve said it for years, selling and influence – whether it’s selling yourself, a product or service – is all about one thing: FEELING!

It is about how you make people feel about yourself, your products and services. That’s it!

(2) The second realization that immediately entered
my mind when thinking about being around MJ was
the “promotion” behind the marketing of Michael

I’ve also said for years that…

“If nobody knows about you, they can’t buy you, your products or services!”

Whether you like it or not, you MUST be a promoter of yourself!

Michael Jordan understands it…KISS Rocker Gene Simmons understands it…Singer Madonna understands it…Boxing Legend Muhammad Ali understood it…and, I certainly understand it!

You don’t have to like or agree with the promotion any of us mentioned do, but you must observe it, study it and, most importantly, you MUST USE similar ideas for yourself!

How true this is, especially when it comes to your speaking business!

Remember…

Don’t ever forget that!

You must, on a consistent and continuous basis, focus on promoting and marketing you, your products and services ALL OF THE TIME!  When is it okay to let up? NEVER!  That’s THE one thing you never stop!

  • you never stop promoting yourself and your speaking services
    during each presentation
  • you never stop mailing brochures to event coordinators
  • you never stop gathering testimonial letters
  • you never stop updating your website
  • you never stop creating new info-products
  • you never stop learning from coaches
  • you never stop attending speaker-marketing trainings
  • you never stop joining Mastermind Coaching Groups
  • you never stop networking your way in with Centers of Influence
  • you never stop (you get the picture)!

It’s not a question of whether or not promotion and marketing works. It works for any niche in any market for one simple reason:

(3) The third realization I had is about the amount of criticism Michael received from colleagues about the promotion and marketing of himself and his brand

Other players, agents, managers, etc., were quick to offer their negative criticism, but that never derailed his efforts.

The same is true for Gene Simmons, Madonna, Muhammad Ali, and, yes, even me.

And not once has any type of criticism ever derailed any of us from continuous promotion and marketing of our brands.

Stop worrying about what colleagues are thinking because they don’t buy from you – prospects do.

Here’s a little secret:

You will always have colleagues who criticize, talk about you, your promotion, your marketing methods, your style, your delivery, your “whatever!”

If I told you how many speakers started criticizing me when I first began sharing my “speaker-marketing-secrets,” or how many offered criticism when ABC TV invited me to be featured on the “Secret Millionaire” TV show, your head would spin.

Truth-be-told, they were simply jealous that I was the one (not them) who had thousands of people coming to learn speaker-marketing from me and that I was the one (not them) ABC chose to feature on worldwide television.

Ironically, I can’t tell you how many of those same colleagues who started criticizing have, now, begged me for help after seeing what I have done to help others with their careers.

As long as you’re honest, ethical and coming from a place of true service when you’re promoting and marketing yourself, then you can’t worry about what jealous colleagues are saying because of the way you are promoting and marketing yourself.

Now, go promote and market your great value consistently and continuously and create a “feeling” that attracts buyers!

I BELIEVE IN YOU!  YOU CAN DO IT!
