Things get very steamy between Jamie and Claire in new Outlander clip (+ new mid-season trailer!) 12 Feb 2015 9:53 AM (11 years ago)

Great Scot! This is a VERRA steamy scene between Jamie (Sam Heughan) and Claire (Caitriona Balfe). A scene we'll get to see when the show returns to Starz on April 4th.

Have a look after the cut.

Is it getting hot in here?

*UPDATE*

I've added the new mid-season trailer narrated by Jamie. Enjoy!

New Outlander Look Ahead video features more Jamie/Claire sexy times and a first look at Ian Murray 4 Feb 2015 12:08 PM (11 years ago)

STARZ has released a new look ahead video for Outlander (as part of its #Droughtlander campaign) featuring some exclusive interviews from the cast and creators of the hit drama series.

Executive Producer Ronald D. Moore and stars Caitriona Balfe, Sam Heughan, Tobias Menzies, Graham McTavish and Laura Donnelly let us in on what fans can expect from the second half of the season.

The video also gives us more sexy times between Claire (Balfe) and Jamie (Heughan), and a first look at Jamie’s brother-in-law (and Jenny’s hubby) Ian Murray (Steven Cree). I have to admit, this is not how I pictured him from Diana Gabaldon’s books. At all. But I trust Cree was the right man for the part.

Have a look at the brand-new video, just below the cut.

Outlander returns to Starz on Saturday, April 4th at 9PM ET/PT.

Check out the first glorious minute from Outlander's highly anticipated opening episode of the second half of season one 25 Jan 2015 9:33 AM (11 years ago)

Starz has released the first minute for the highly anticipated second half of the first season of its hit series Outlander which finally returns on April 4th after a painful, six-month long hiatus.

The opening scene - introduced by showrunner extraordinaire Ronald D. Moore - comes from Jamie's (Sam Heughan) point of view instead of Claire's (Caitriona Balfe), which was the only one we've heard so far. This also marks a stark departure from the first book written by Herself, Diana Gabaldon, on which season one is based, because it was told solely from Claire's POV. We first heard Jamie's "voice" in the third book of the series, Voyager.

It's a bit jarring and doesn't pick up exactly where I thought it would, but it's very interesting to hear what Jamie thinks. (Since the official Starz video is for US viewers only, I managed to fish out this one which everyone can see.) Have a look after the cut.

1st awesome promotional key art (poster) and release date for Ron D. Moore's Outlander! 8 May 2014 10:42 AM (11 years ago)

Starz has just released the first awesome promotional key art for its upcoming time-traveling series Outlander from executive producer Ronald D. Moore, as well as finally providing us with the date for the eagerly anticipated series' premiere!

Here’s Starz’s announcement:

Starz announced today that its highly anticipated new original series “Outlander,” adapted from Diana Gabaldon’s international best-selling books and executive produced by Ronald D. Moore (“Battlestar Galactica,” “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine,” “Star Trek: The Next Generation”) will debut Saturday, August 9th at 9pm ET/PT. The sixteen-episode first season is currently shooting on location in Scotland. For more information, go to the official Outlander Facebook Page and follow @Outlander_Starz on Twitter and Instagram. Join the conversation with #Outlander and #STARZ.

Starz also released the official image of the key art with the tagline, “What if your future was the past?” The poster depicts Claire (Caitriona Balfe), a married British combat nurse from 1945 who mysteriously falls back in time to 1743 Scotland, where she is torn between her husband Frank Randall (Tobias Menzies) and Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan), a Scottish warrior who comes to her rescue. The image represents Claire's physical and emotional journey. At the start of the series, she is a woman who has been transported into the past, but she's reaching back and trying to stay connected to the life and husband that are now beyond her reach. Starz collaborated with The Refinery and photographer Frank Ockenfels 3 to create the key art which was shot on location in the Scottish highlands.

The “Outlander” series spans the genres of romance, science fiction, history, and adventure in one epic tale. It follows Claire Randall as she navigates the hidden dangers of 18th century Scotland, an unknown world where her freedom and very life are at risk. When she is forced to marry Jamie Fraser, a chivalrous and romantic young Scottish warrior, a passionate affair is ignited that tears Claire’s heart between two vastly different men in two irreconcilable lives.

Diana Gabaldon’s seven-book series has sold more than 25 million copies worldwide and has graced the New York Times best-seller list six times. The eighth installment of the “Outlander” series titled “Written in My Own Heart’s Blood” will be released June 10th, 2014.

The first two episodes of the series are written by Executive Producer Ronald D. Moore and directed by John Dahl (“Dexter,” “Breaking Bad,” “Justified”). “Outlander” is produced by Tall Ship Productions, Story Mining & Supply Company and Left Bank Pictures in association with Sony Pictures Television.

In addition to Caitriona Balfe (Claire), Sam Heughan (Jamie Fraser) and Tobias Menzies (Frank Randall/Jonathan “Black Jack” Randall), the cast if “Outlander” also includes Graham McTavish (Dougal MacKenzie), Gary Lewis (Colum MacKenzie), Lotte Verbeek (Geillis Duncan), Duncan Lacroix (Murtagh FitzGibbons Fraser).

Check out this 1st (AWESOME) official image of Matt Ryan as John Constantine! 13 Mar 2014 7:49 AM (12 years ago)

NBC has released the very first official image of Matt Ryan in character as John Constantine. And he looks A-MA-ZING.

Probably hoping to hype up its upcoming TV series based on the Hellblazer DC Comic, Constantine is the brainchild of David S. Goyer, Neil Marshall and Daniel Cerone. Goyer said “I’ve been a fan of John Constantine since he was first introduced in 1985. This Constantine, envisioned by Neil Marshall and embodied by Matt Ryan, looks like he sprang directly from the comics’ covers. Fans old and new are going to be in for a treat.”

John Constantine is a former conman hailing from Liverpool (London in the series) turned occult detective who finds himself battling dark, supernatural forces to save the Earth.

This pic has a lot of things we like: Ryan’s attitude, the trademark trenchcoat and loose tie, and the smoke billowing around him (no cigarette visible, though).

Starz releases three new awesome Outlander pics of Jamie, Claire and Frank! 28 Feb 2014 10:52 AM (12 years ago)

Starz has released three brand new pics from its upcoming time-traveling series Outlander.

The first one (the one above) is a very beautiful, official promo shot of Claire (Caitriona Balfe - who looks AMAZING in that pic), standing in what looks like the stables at Castle Leoch.

The other two pics are behind-the-scenes shots.

The first one shows Claire and her husband Frank Randall (Tobias Menzies) in their WWII army uniforms at a train station. It's a rather nice shot from the director's point of view. The scene itself looks very atmospheric.

The second behind-the-scenes shot shows Scottish actor Sam Heughan, who plays Jamie Fraser A.K.A. "The King of Men" (Ron Moore's words), getting his make-up on for the scene where Claire tends to Jamie's wounds at Castle Leoch.

Outlander is executive produced by Battlestar Galactica's Ronald D. Moore and is based on author Diana Gabaldon's series of novels. It will air on Starz later this summer.

Claire and Frank get romantic and Jamie gets naked in 2 new Outlander pics 17 Feb 2014 7:25 AM (12 years ago)

Starz has released two brand new pics for Ronald D. Moore’s (Battlestar Galactica) upcoming time-traveling series Outlander.

Based on author Diana Gabaldon’s series of books (7 big massive books are out to-date with an 8th one coming up on June 10), Outlander tells the story of WWII combat nurse Claire Elizabeth Beauchamp Randall who steps through the stones at Craigh na Dun and ends up in 1743 Scotland where she meets Jamie Fraser, a chivalrous Highlander.

The first pic shows a quiet, romantic moment between Claire (Caitriona Balfe) and her husband Frank Randall (Game of Thrones’ Tobias Menzies).

The second pic shows Claire tending to a wounded and half–naked (and very buff) Jamie (Sam Heughan). Naysayers about Sam being not big enough to play Jamie, please stay at the door.

So, well, hum, yes, verra nice, verra nice indeed.

Outlander will air on Starz in the Summer of 2014.

Ron D. Moore talks about Outlander, Sex, Game of Thrones and the future of Helix 13 Feb 2014 10:55 AM (12 years ago)

Ronald D. Moore (Battlestar Galactica) gave a recent, excellent interview with The Hollywood Reporter in which he discusses Starz’s upcoming time-traveling drama series Outlander, sex on cable and a little show called Game of Thrones, as well as his science-fiction series Helix.

Below are excerpts from the interview.

About Outlander:

You had two shows, with Helix and Outlander, ordered straight to series in 2013, and both on cable. Do you think it's easier to develop for cable right now?

I don't know if it's easier. That's a hard question to ask because each of these projects has their own particular variables, and we're never quite sure which one gets the brass ring and which one doesn't. Certainly, I've had more success developing in cable than broadcast, but why is a really hard question to answer. I'm not sure if it's any easier; it's all hard. It's hard to develop anything for TV. It's not as hard as it is to develop for the feature world, which is just insane. Every network has their own particular set of requirements, what their needs are, what they think has succeeded or failed for them in the past and where they're trying to go. So every season, you're kind of starting over when it comes to what you might be able to achieve.

With Starz's Outlander, what's the draw there for you?

I really like the period -- and I get to do two periods. I'm a fan of history and historical fiction, so I get to do the 1940s and I get to do the 18th century, which is a treat for me. I really like creating those worlds; that's the one similarity to what I've done in sci-fi. With Battlestar Galactia, everyday, we were creating a world that doesn't really exist and I really enjoy that. I enjoy the challenge of it in the production sense and I like creating something that is a departure from where we all live.

Do you think Outlander could have worked on a basic cable or a broadcast network?

I don't think it could have worked in broadcast. The elements we would have had to change from the book, they would have freaked out about a lot of the sexual stuff, especially the latter part of the book and the whole plot with Jack Randall, Jamie and the prison rape. We never would have been able to touch that on broadcast television. I also don't think that they would have gone for the first-person narrative. There are a lot of things you could not have done in broadcast. This had to be cable.

Is there a note that Starz has given you that you found particularly helpful?

One of the very first notes that [Starz CEO] Chris Albrecht told me was to trust the book. He said, "We love the book. Make the show for the fans of the book and believe that anyone who doesn't know this material, when they see it, they'll be swept into the story like everyone else is. "I was really taken aback because nobody says that in this town. Generally, people [option] books and say, "We bought it for the cover, do what you want and nobody really cares." Starz had integrity.

Outlander has been referred to as a Game of Thrones for women. Would you agree?

I don't know. That's a hard label because they are such different pieces in every sense of the word. I love Game of Thrones. I didn't read the books, but Game is about a lot of different characters and a lot of different storylines. Some of the joy of that show is the continual turn of moving from this character to that one and back again and watching it all come together. Outlander is a central, single narrative about one woman and her journey. One is a fantasy world that doesn't exist; one is a real historical place. The only thing that I take from Game is that the adaptation of a successful book with an existing fan base can not only work, it can be wildly successful, so it gives me great confidence and hope that we can do that.

With Outlander, there are seven books in the series. Do you want to do one book per season?

It's really hard to say at this point; we're just trying to get season one. I'm starting to think ahead about what season two would be in the second book, and I'm starting to shape what the outlines of that would be in my head. But beyond that, it's just too far off. I think there's a comfort level and a simplicity to say that every season is one book, but it doesn't have to be. You can start moving the pieces around deciding where one season begins and another ends.

Would you like to do that Walking Dead model where you do the eight and eight split-run or should Outlander run for 16 straight weeks?

I don't know if I have a preference with that. I know I don't want to do it like Galactica where fans kept getting confused about when we were on. It felt like we were broadcast randomly at times. They would split the season and then we'd be on a different night; there was no rhyme or reason to it. I don't know that I have a preference between eight and eight or 16.

You've said before that you're using Diana as a sounding board. How does that work? Has she been instrumental in a specific scene or an obstacle you've encountered?

It was like a growing comfort level of sending her the scripts and seeing her reaction. I would pitch her things and say what I'm thinking about doing and ask for her thoughts. She was always so positive and sometimes excited. It gave me a sense of confidence of where we were going, and it was good to have her along the way. And to know that if she's signing off on it, I'm pretty sure the fans are going to sign off on it. So it just gives you the confidence to keep moving. I've asked her a couple of times if there was anything in particular she was looking to see shot and realized that she has an overall love of all of it and is just thrilled to see it. It's nice. It's not Saving Mr. Banks (laughs), which I really liked. Doing what I'm doing and watching this movie, I thought, "Wow, this could have been a whole different thing!"

The book series is very sexual. Have you had any issues with boundaries from Starz?

I haven't run into any boundaries yet. There's a lot of sex in the book, so we put it in the show where it is in the book. It's organic to the story because this is the way the story was laid out. We don't have to overdo it; we don't have to just take somebody's clothes off for the sake of doing it. I feel very comfortable about it. I've got a 14-year-old and a 12-year-old at home who know about this project and love this stuff. I've showed them some footage and the trailer, but at the same time I'm not going to sit and watch this with my 12-year-old daughter once we really get going. I wish I could, but that's not what the book is and that's not what the story is.

And here's what Moore had to say about his show Helix (currently airing on Syfy in the U.S. and Showcase in Canada, as well as more Outlander!)

How are you balancing your time between Outlander and Helix?

Outlander really takes the lion's share of my time. Helix has Steve Maeda, who is the showrunner and deserves the lion's share of the credit because he's there everyday and working in the writers' room and dealing with production problems. I helped get it up on its feet and helped develop the initial mythology, and I'd come into post every once in a while and cut some things and help out, but he's really the guy. [Outlander] is what's taking most of my time.

What kind of plans are you making for a second season of Helix?

We have some ideas for season two. Before the show was sold, we had some conceptual ideas about what the second season would be. We do have a place to start from.

That the virus can't remain on the base for the entire series.

No. The first season takes place entirely within the base. And then that's part of the concept of the show -- every episode is a day. We're going to stay in this one location, and just make a little crucible for these characters as they struggle with what's happening. The idea would be to do a similar thing in the second season -- to also go to a place and tell the story in a place.

Would season two show how this virus is taking shape in a different location with different characters?

We would have some of the same characters in a different location, but it's hard to even talk about it because we haven't gotten to the end of this season. It depends on how this season ends and that will tell you how and where the next season will be going.

Are you developing anything else right now?

Not actively. There are a couple other series ideas I had kicking around that I would like to get to, but Outlander is pretty much a full-time job.
