You can setup your prefered left and right module "wide" in the Joomla Backend at template parameters. And every module ( right, left, user1, user2) are full collapsible.

Now, it´s so easy to change the Template width, goto the Joomla backend Template Parameters and type your prefered width ( e.g. 700px, 800px, 1200px, 80%, 100%) and click save. That´s all.
