I was thinking of using steel pipe, I mean the Yakima bars are just pipes, so why pay 90 dollars for them? I'd like to use the rack to transport lumber.

If you don't need super stiffness, I've made some out of 1-1/8" aluminum tubing. way cheaper than the Yakima bars.
